'American Whispers' was made in 2018 after discovering a box of letters in my deceased great grandma’s house which my mum had sent her during the 1990s while working at Camp America. The photographs explore multiple layers of time and relationship, as I dress as my mum and create scenes which imagine what the adventures she described were like to experience. The images ask questions about truth and subjectivity, acting like a form of Chinese whispers in which the original stimuli is by no doubt an altered account of her life which she tailored to suit her grandma's eyes. I then read, interpreted, and reimagined the letters. My mum has never seemed the adventurous type and our relationship has always been strained. The only way I could connect to the seemingly distant version of my mother was to commit identity fraud and place myself in a recreation of her world.
